John Koufos

The Website

A nationally recognized criminal justice advocate with 20 years in coalitions, campaigns, and courtrooms needed a site that could speak to three audiences at once — not one long bio page. AIM Squad built John Koufos a digital presence from the ground up, organizing his advocacy, speaking, and consulting work so each audience lands where it needs to.

The Challenge: When One Reputation Has Three Different Jobs

John Koufos operates at an unusual intersection. He has worked with multiple Presidential Administrations and Governors. His reentry work has been recognized by President Donald J. Trump. He is a former Director of Criminal Justice Advocacy at Arnold Ventures, a former National Director of Reentry Initiatives at Right On Crime, and the former Executive Director of the New Jersey Reentry Corporation. He has been profiled by The New York Times and publishes op-eds in Fox News, USA Today, and The Hill.

That reputation has to do three different jobs — and one website can’t do all three.

An event organizer booking a keynote needs the personal story and the stage presence. A Fortune 500 buyer or government agency evaluating a consulting firm needs capabilities, sectors, and proof of delivery. A corrections director or philanthropic funder deciding whether to join a national coalition needs an initiative that reads as institutional, not personal.

Collapsing all three into a single site would have diluted every one of them. Building three disconnected sites would have fragmented the reputation they all draw from. The answer was a deliberate multi-property architecture: three destinations, three audiences, one consistent standard of credibility.

Four Problems We Set Out to Solve

Three audiences with three different decision paths. Speaking bureaus, enterprise and government clients, and policy coalition partners arrive with different questions and different definitions of trust.

Media-heavy content that needed real architecture. Congressional hearing footage, national broadcast appearances, Oval Office and Capitol Hill photography, published op-eds, and peer-reviewed research all had to be organized and integrated — not dumped onto a page.

A subject-matter expert, not a content strategist. John is a policy and corrections authority. Vendors offering to “place his content” were leaving the hardest part — deciding what each site should say and how it should be structured — on the client.

A fixed deadline over the holidays. The initiative build had to ship across the Christmas and New Year period to meet a business deadline that wouldn’t move.

Our Approach: Multi-Property Brand and Web Development

Phase 1: Three Brand Identities, One Ecosystem

Goal: give each property its own identity without fragmenting the reputation they share.

We developed logo and brand identity systems for each property — the JK mark for the executive personal brand, the Cottage Four identity for the consulting firm, and the HPHC system for the national initiative. Each was built with multiple lockups and light and dark background variants, so the identity travels intact from a website header to a conference banner to a press image without being redrawn.

Phase 2: Information Architecture Matched to Search Intent

Goal: build each site around what its visitors actually came to do.

koufos.com — structured around a hiring decision. About, Work With Me, and three dedicated service paths (Consulting & Strategy, Public-Private Partnerships, Speaking), supported by an endorsement wall, a photo gallery, and a video library of national broadcast appearances. Each service gets its own indexable page rather than competing inside one catch-all.

cottagefour.com — structured around firm capability. Four solution verticals (Healthcare Solutions, Workforce Development, Technology & Corporate Services, Justice Solutions), a published media wall carrying The New York Times, Fox News, USA Today, Florida Trend, and The Hill, plus contact routing segmented by service interest.

prison.care — structured around coalition credibility. Three policy pillars, a Partners section, a Leadership section profiling five national figures, and a dedicated research library citing the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the Annals of Internal Medicine, and the American Journal of Public Health.

Phase 3: WordPress Design and Development Under a Hard Deadline

Goal: hit the date without shortening the build.

All three properties were designed and developed on WordPress with Elementor, giving John’s team the ability to publish new op-eds, video, and event coverage without a developer in the loop — essential for a practice whose news cycle moves with federal policy. The initiative site was delivered through the holiday period to meet the deadline.

Phase 4: Technical SEO and Publication-Ready Foundations

Goal: make every shared link work and every page findable.

Each site launched fully indexed, with canonical tags, Open Graph metadata, and social share images configured — so when a journalist, partner, or congressional staffer shares a link, it renders correctly on every platform. Each property also carries Terms, Privacy, and a dedicated ADA Compliance page, appropriate for a practice operating in a federal and state government environment.

The Results

Three brand identity and logo systems deployed across three properties and available for events, decks, and press.

Three live, fully indexed websites, each architected around a distinct audience and a distinct decision.

An executive personal brand site with three dedicated service pages, an endorsement wall, a gallery spanning the Oval Office and Capitol Hill, and a video library of congressional and national broadcast appearances.

A consulting firm site presenting four solution verticals and a published media wall carrying national outlets.

A national initiative site presenting four partner organizations, five national leadership figures, a ten-item peer-reviewed research library, and press including a July 2026 op-ed in The Hill.

Delivered on deadline, through the holidays.

An ongoing relationship, with all three properties continuing to expand from 2024 into 2026.

Frequently Asked Question

Should an executive have a personal brand website separate from their company website?

when the two serve different buying decisions. A personal brand site sells the individual — speaking, advisory, thought leadership — while a company site sells the firm’s capability and team. Forcing both onto one property means neither audience gets a clear path, and it weakens the site’s topical focus in search. Separate properties let each rank for its own terms and convert its own visitor.

How long does it take to build a brand identity and website?

A full brand identity and multi-page website typically runs four to six weeks. Compressed timelines are possible when scope and content are locked early — the John Koufos initiative site was designed, built, and delivered across the Christmas and New Year holiday to meet a fixed business deadline.

What is the difference between a web designer and a development partner?

A web designer builds what you hand them. A development partner helps decide what the site should say, how it should be structured, and what questions you haven’t thought to ask. For subject-matter experts who aren’t content strategists, that difference is the entire project.

Do nonprofit and advocacy websites need different design than business websites?

They need different proof. A business site converts on capability and price. An advocacy or coalition site converts on institutional credibility — partner organizations, leadership, and citable research presented as a real destination rather than a footnote.

Why does website architecture matter for SEO?

Search engines rank pages, not businesses. Giving each service, solution, or policy area its own indexable page lets each compete for its own search terms. Compressing everything into one page means one thin result instead of several strong ones.

Key Takeaways for Executives, Consultants, and Mission-Driven Leaders

1. One reputation can require more than one website. When the same credibility serves speaking bookings, enterprise engagements, and coalition building, forcing all three onto one site weakens each. Separate properties give every audience its own front door — and give every property its own search footprint.

2. Hire a development partner, not a page-builder. Most subject-matter experts shouldn’t have to be content strategists. The value is in the questions asked before the build starts.

3. Structure your proof as a destination. Media walls, research libraries, and video galleries give journalists, partners, and AI search engines something concrete to cite — and give each property durable authority.

4. Build for the news cycle you’re in. A practice moving alongside federal action needs to publish fast. A site the internal team can update without a developer is the difference between covering the moment and missing it.
