What Is AEO, GEO, and SEO? A Plain-English Guide for Business Owners

Here’s the short answer: SEO (Search Engine Optimization) helps your business rank in traditional search results. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) helps your business become the direct answer to specific questions. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) helps your business get cited and recommended inside AI-generated responses from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews.

They’re not competing strategies. They’re three layers of the same goal — being found by the people looking for what you sell. This guide breaks down what each one actually means, how they differ, and what a business in Whittier, greater Los Angeles, or anywhere else should be doing about them right now.

What Is SEO?

SEO is the practice of making your website more visible in search engine results — the ranked list of links you’ve seen on Google your whole life. When someone searches “carpet cleaning Whittier” or “how to fix a leaking water heater,” SEO determines whether your business shows up on page one or page nowhere.
SEO stands on three pillars:
Technical health. Your site loads fast, works on mobile, and is structured so Google can crawl and understand every page.
Relevant content. Your pages genuinely answer what searchers are looking for — service pages that address real questions, articles that demonstrate expertise, depth on the topics your customers care about.
Authority. Other credible websites link to you, mention you, and review you — evidence that your business is real and respected.
SEO has been the backbone of online visibility for over two decades, and despite yearly predictions of its death, it still is. What’s changed is what sits on top of it.

What Is AEO?

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is the practice of structuring your content so that search engines and AI assistants can extract your answer and present it directly.
Think about how people actually search now. They don’t type “plumber Whittier reviews comparison.” They ask full questions: “Who’s a reliable plumber in Whittier that works weekends?” And increasingly, they don’t click through ten links for the answer — they get one answer, from a featured snippet, a voice assistant, or an AI summary at the top of the page.
AEO is how you become that answer. In practice, it looks like:
Answer-first content. Pages that open with the direct answer, then elaborate — instead of burying the point under twelve paragraphs of throat-clearing.
Question-based structure. Headings written the way people actually ask (“How much does a website cost in Whittier?”), because engines match questions to questions.
FAQ content and schema markup. Structured data that labels your questions, answers, services, and business details in a format machines parse natively.
You’ve seen AEO working every time Google answers a question before you’ve clicked anything. The business supplying that answer did something deliberate to be there.

What Is GEO?

GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is the newest of the three, and it addresses a new reality: millions of buying decisions now start inside AI tools that generate answers instead of listing links.
When someone asks ChatGPT “who should I hire to redesign my business website in the Whittier area?” the AI composes a recommendation from everything it knows — your website, your reviews, your directory listings, articles that mention you, and the overall consistency of your business’s presence across the web. GEO is the discipline of shaping those inputs so the AI’s answer includes you, describes you accurately, and recommends you confidently.
GEO work centers on:
Entity consistency. Your business name, address, phone, services, and story must agree everywhere they appear. Conflicting information makes you a risky answer, and AI engines skip risky answers.
Third-party validation. AI engines weight what others say about you more than what you say about yourself. Reviews, local press, and independent mentions are the raw material of AI recommendations.
Citable content. Clear, factual, well-structured pages that an AI can quote without guessing.

SEO vs. AEO vs. GEO: What’s Actually Different?

The simplest way to hold all three in your head:

SEO gets you ranked. The goal is position — showing up high in the list when someone searches.

AEO gets you answered. The goal is extraction — having your content chosen as the direct answer to a question.

GEO gets you cited. The goal is recommendation — being the business an AI names when someone asks who to hire.

The overlap between them is enormous, and that’s the point. Fast, well-structured, genuinely helpful content with strong reviews and consistent business data feeds all three at once. A business that treats them as one connected system gets three kinds of visibility from one body of work.

Do You Still Need SEO if AI Search Is Taking Over?

Yes — more than ever, because AI engines learn from the same web that Google crawls. There is no AEO or GEO without an SEO foundation. An AI engine can’t recommend a business whose website it can’t read, whose reviews don’t exist, and whose information contradicts itself across the internet.
The honest way to think about it: SEO is the foundation, AEO is the structure, GEO is the reach. Skipping the foundation to chase the trend produces nothing. Building the foundation and stopping there leaves your hardest-won visibility on the table just as search behavior shifts.

What Should a Local Business Do About All This?

If you run a business in Whittier or anywhere in Southeast LA County, here’s the practical priority order:

First, get your entity clean. Same name, address, and phone number on your website, Google Business Profile, and every directory. This single unglamorous step improves your standing in all three disciplines at once.

Second, make your website answer questions. Every service page should directly answer what it costs, how it works, how long it takes, and who it’s for — in plain language, near the top.

Third, build real-world proof. Reviews, local mentions, community presence. Both Google and AI engines are ultimately trying to identify businesses that real people trust — so give them the evidence.

Fourth, measure what the engines say about you. Search your business on Google, then ask ChatGPT and Perplexity about it. What comes back — and whether it’s accurate — is your baseline.

The Bottom Line

SEO, AEO, and GEO aren’t three trends to choose between — they’re the same discipline evolving in real time. The businesses that treated Google Business Profile seriously early still own their Map Packs today. AI search is that moment again, and the window where this is an advantage rather than table stakes is open right now.
